“Thanks to the SBU (Security Service of Ukraine. — RBC) a special operation was carried out. Well done»,— wrote the President, promising to provide details later. The SBU confirmed the detention of Medvedchuk.

Press Secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the publication, said that the photo needs to be checked due to the large number of fakes, TASS reports.

In May last year, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine charged Medvedchuk with treason and violating the rules of war, he faces life imprisonment. The prosecution believes that in 2015 he entered into a preliminary agreement with a Russian official for the extraction of minerals on the Black Sea shelf in the Crimea region. In addition, he could transmit data on the location of the “secret military unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine” Russian special services through Taras Kozak, a party member who was in Russia. Medvedchuk is also a suspect in the case of creating an organization that, under the guise of helping Ukrainians find employment in Russia, collected data about them and recruited them.

Later, he was charged with conspiring against Ukraine to undermine the country's energy security: according to the SBU, he helped disrupt coal supplies to Ukraine from abroad in favor of raw materials from the Donbass. Since May 13, Medvedchuk has been under house arrest.

In the OPLJ, the criminal cases against Medvedchuk were called “reprisals against political opponents, the establishment of the absolute dictatorship of Zelensky and his inner circle.”

Chile and Argentina suspended supplies of lithium raw materials to Russia

In Russia, lithium ore is not mined. The representative of the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that Argentina and Chile, along with Bolivia and China, were the main suppliers of this raw material

Workers collect lithium carbonate

Argentina and Chile have suspended the supply of lithium ore to Russia, the deputy director of the department said at a round table in the Federation Council Metallurgy and Materials Ministry of Industry and Trade Vladislav Demidov, TASS reports.

“There is no production of lithium raw materials in Russia, the raw materials come in the form of lithium carbonate mainly from Chile, Argentina, China and Bolivia. Specifically, under the present conditions, shipments from Chile and Argentina are suspended, the current opportunity to receive raw materials is only from Bolivia,— he said.

Russia has processing capacities, companies process lithium carbonate to meet both domestic needs and export supplies. “In terms of lithium, the problem is actually already gigantic, because if there is a refusal to supply raw materials from Bolivia, Chile and Argentina will not supply us with raw materials in the same way, then, unfortunately, we have nowhere to take lithium raw materials,” &mdash ; the official warned.

Demidov also suggested speeding up the issuance of licenses for companies capable of mining lithium in Russia.

Lithium, its compounds and alloys are critically needed for the technological development of many industries— automotive industry, aircraft industry, metallurgy, microelectronics, chemistry and others. Lithium is most important in the production of high capacity batteries.

Since the end of February, Western countries have already introduced several packages of sanctions against Russia. Argentina and Chile did not impose sanctions, but Western restrictions affected Russian financial and transport companies, as well as transportation routes, which led to a break in supplies.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) confirmed the detention of the head of the political council of the Opposition Platform party; For life» (OPPL), People's Deputy Viktor Medvedchuk.

Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky published a photo of the politician in handcuffs.

“You can be a fugitive from justice <…>. You can even put on a Ukrainian military uniform for disguise… But will it help you get away from punishment? Not at all!»— according to a message on the Telegram channel of the SBU.

“A man of the Komsomol aggressive type.” Why is Viktor Medvedchuk famous?

On April 12, the SBU detained a politician accused of treason and other crimes. In February, the Interior Ministry reported on his escape from house arrest. About Medvedchuk's path in politics, lawyer past and business interests – in the RBC material .jpg” alt=”«Aggressive Komsomol type man». What is Viktor Medvedchuk famous for” />

Viktor Medvedchuk

Viktor Medvedchuk is 66 years old and was born on August 7, 1954 in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, where his father was in exile “for participation in Ukrainian nationalist activities.” In the 1960s, the family returned to the territory of the Ukrainian SSR. There Medvedchuk graduated from high school and the law faculty of Kiev State University.

“The lawyer is not interested in the case”

After training, he became a lawyer, starting his practice at the legal advice office of the Shevchenkovsky district of the Kiev City Bar Association. At that time, Medvedchuk was a lawyer for Ukrainian dissidents Yuriy Lytvyn and Vasily Stus. They were convicted on charges of anti-Soviet agitation, both died in the camp. The Chronicle of Current Events, which was published by dissidents, claimed that Medvedchuk “said in his speech that all of Stus' crimes deserved to be punished.” The writer Yevgeny Sverstiuk said about Stus's attitude towards his lawyer that he was not interested in the case: “When Stus met with the lawyer assigned to him, he immediately felt that Medvedchuk was an aggressive Komsomol type person, he did not defend him, did not want to understand him, and, in fact, he is not interested in his case.

Medvedchuk noted in 2001 that he suffered from the Soviet regime. “In the Soviet years, I was a lawyer, not an investigator. Although, by the way, I really wanted to become an investigator. But I couldn't, for obvious reasons, — he said.— And I have more reason to be offended by the Soviet regime than others.

In 2019, the book “The Case of Vasily Stus” was published, based on the archives of the KGB. Then Medvedchuk demanded in court to ban its distribution, since some of the wording in it, according to the politician, defamed his honor and dignity. Later, a court in Kyiv found several fragments of the book unreliable, and also banned the use of Medvedchuk's name without his consent. In March 2021, the author of the book appealed against the decision and won a lawsuit against Medvedchuk, thereby canceling the distribution ban.

In 1996, he defended his Ph. doctoral thesis (topic “Modern Ukrainian national idea and topical issues of state creation”).

Medvedchuk began his political career in 1993, joining the Human Rights Party. A year later, he joined the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine, which he headed in 1998. In 1997, already in the SDPU, Medvedchuk became a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada, where he worked until 2002. From 1998 to 2000 he was Vice Speaker of Parliament. In the presidential elections in Ukraine in 1999, he headed the headquarters of Leonid Kuchma, and in 2002 he became the head of the presidential administration.

In the early 2000s, as Medvedchuk said, he met Russian President Vladimir Putin. They were introduced to each other at one of the official events.

In 2004, Putin became the godfather of Medvedchuk's youngest daughter Daria (Dmitry Medvedev's wife Svetlana became the godmother). According to the politician, this was the merit of his wife Oksana Marchenko, who asked her husband to make such a request to Putin.

«I am very pleased, we are proud— and I, and she, and our family— the fact that Vladimir Vladimirovich did not refuse this and agreed to become the godfather of my daughter, — said Medvedchuk.

Putin in the summer of 2017 called the Ukrainian politician a nationalist. “I believe that Viktor Medvedchuk— Ukrainian nationalist. He does not like this definition, he considers himself a patriot of Ukraine, but it is no secret that his father was an active member of the OUN, was convicted by a Soviet court, was in prison and was exiled to the Krasnoyarsk Territory, where Medvedchuk was born,— Putin said.

Medvedchuk really did not agree with this definition of Putin. “But in his understanding this can take place, because he has a specific understanding of nationalism in Ukraine,” — said Medvedchuk.

By the way, in 2009, Putin wrote an essay about Viktor Medvedchuk for the anniversary issue of Glavred magazine, where he called him an exceptionally competent and reliable person.

In 2005, Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko (an associate of Petro Poroshenko and later the Prosecutor General of Ukraine) accused Medvedchuk of falsifying the 2004 presidential election in favor of Viktor Yanukovych. Then Medvedchuk was the head of the presidential administration. After the Orange Revolution and a second vote, Viktor Yushchenko became president.

In 2006, Medvedchuk, being the head of the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine, went to the elections to the Verkhovna Rada. However, the “Not so!” block, in which he was third on the list, scored only 1.01% and did not get into the Rada.

In 2011, Medvedchuk initiated the creation of the Ukrainian Choice public organization. The movement's website states that its goal— implementation of the constitutional right of the people to govern the country, to participate in the adoption of strategically important decisions for the state.

In 2017, Medvedchuk participated in the negotiation process for the exchange of prisoners between Kiev and the DPR and LPR. Later, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko noted that Medvedchuk was no longer participating in the negotiations within the Minsk process, but called him the de facto representative of the Russian president in the contact group: “De facto, he is Putin’s representative there. He may be the only channel for delivering information.

In July 2018, he joined the Opposition Platform— For Life,” in November of the same year he headed its political council. In the parliamentary elections, he was elected a people's deputy from this party. He went to the polls third on the electoral list.

As for the last presidential elections, where the main competition unfolded between Vladimir Zelensky and Petro Poroshenko, Medvedchuk supported the candidacy of Yuriy Boyko. Together with him they came on a visit to Russia.

In February 2021, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky approved sanctions against Medvedchuk and his wife Oksana Marchenko, as well as six individuals and 19 legal entities. Then it was reported that the sanctions were related to an investigation into the supply of coal from the self-proclaimed LPR to Russia. On May 11, 2021, Medvedchuk was suspected of treason. He was transferred from a witness to a suspect in an attempt to steal national resources in Crimea. Party leader “Opposition Platform” For life» called the criminal prosecution a political reprisal, but a fabricated case.

A businessman from the Forbes list

Medvedchuk began his career in business back in the 1990s. Ukrainian media call him one of the members of the informal association of the country's largest businessmen— “Kiev Seven” (in addition to Medvedchukatud, the brothers Igor and Grigory Surkis, Yuri Karpenko, Bogdan Gubsky, Valentin Zgursky and Yuri Lyakh were included). Then Medvedchuk became one of the founders of the Ukrainian Credit Bank, the international law office «Biayam» and industrial and financial concern “Slavutich”.

In the list of the richest people in the country, which is compiled by the Ukrainian version of Forbes magazine, Medvedchuk made his debut only in 2021. The politician and businessman was ranked 12th in the ranking of the hundred richest Ukrainian businessmen, becoming the richest of his newcomers with a fortune of $620 million. This figure is based on Medvedchuk's assets in the fuel and energy complex, metallurgy, real estate and media.

According to Medvedchuk's parliamentary declaration for 2020, his family's monetary assets amount to more than €14 million. Most of this money is kept in rubles in the Belarusian Absolutbanken account of Medvedchuk's wife, TV presenter Oksana Marchenko. Onazhe, according to the declaration, is the owner of about a hundred companies in Russia, Bulgaria, Belize, as well as in Ukraine, Cyprus and the British Virgin Islands.

Through companies registered offshore, as the journalists of the Schemes program pointed out, (a joint project of Radio Liberty recognized by the Russian authorities as a foreign agent and the TV channel UA: First), Medvedchuk's wife owns shares in several Ukrainian regional electricity supply monopolies (Lvivoblenergo, Prykarpattyeoblenergo, Zaporozhyeoblenergo) , at least 17% of the Dneprospetsstal company, 41% of the Zaporozhye Ferroalloy Plant (one of the largest producers of ferroalloys in Europe), a share in the Odessa transshipment complex specializing in the transshipment of oil and liquefied gas. Finally, Marchenko, through a chain of offshore companies, owns minority shares in the television and radio company «1+1», TV channels «2+2» and “TET”.

For 2020, Marchenko's assets, according to her declaration, included the Russian companies Yugtrans NZNP; and NZNP Engineering. The latter company, as Schemes journalists wrote, in March 2021 became the customer for the modernization of the Novoshakhtinsk oil products plant (Rostov region). In the investigation of “Schemes” and OCCRP in March 2021, citing documents from Cypriot companies, it was alleged that Oksana Marchenko and Natalya Lavrenyuk, who is called the common-law wife of MP Taras Kozak, who is close to Medvedchuk, became co-owners of this plant in February 2014, receiving 42% of the company for $40,000. In 2016, they also received 60% in the company «NZNP Trade» for just $1,000, investigators say. The company at that time owned a license to develop the Gavrikovskoye oil field (Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug), whose reserves are estimated at 137 million tons of oil, the article said.

In May 2019, the Cypriot offshore Ventolor Investments Limited, whose beneficiary, according to Medvedchuk's declaration, is Marchenko, gained control over several more companies of the Novoshakhtinsk Oil Products Plant group, including NZNP Trading House; and Rosewood Shipping (before that, the main owner of NZNP and related companies was a Russian businessman and ex-member of the Forbes list, president of the Yug Rusi group Sergey Kislov).

In April 2021 The Novoshakhtinsky oil products plant fell under sanctions: according to the Ukrainian authorities, it supplied oil products on the territory of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (the company denied this information). Then, in April of this year, the Novoshakhtinsky Oil Plant and related companies changed ownership. According to Medvedchuk's 2020 declaration, Marchenko owned the parent company of the Yug Energo group. On April 5, 2021, according to the Unified State Register of Legal Entities, the owner of 93% of Yug Energo became the Russian company «Peton Invest Technology»— “daughter” Scientific Research Design Institute of Oil and Gas “Peton” Igor Mnushkin, a major contractor for Gazprom. At the same time, Marchenko remained the controlling shareholder of NZNP Trade.

Peskov said that Lukashenka could provide additional information about Bucha

“Our military has repeatedly presented evidence in terms of facts. From the point of view that satellite images could not be made on these dates. They just physically couldn't. On these satellite images, the indicated dates were put there later, — he said.

According to him, the bodies of people in the photographs did not show signs of decomposition, which should have been characteristic of such a number of days. Peskov added that “apparently, Alexander Grigoryevich today handed over additional evidence in favor of the fact that this is a fraud.”

In early April, media outlets including Reuters and AFP, as well as Ukrainian authorities, published footage from the Ukrainian city of Bucha showing corpses. The Russian Defense Ministry called the published photos and videos a provocation and stated that the Russian military was not involved in the killings of civilians. The ministry said that Russian units left Bucha on March 30, and during the time they controlled the city, “not a single local resident was harmed.”

On April 12, Vladimir Putin, commenting on the events in Bucha, recalled the US military strikes on Syria after the Syrian military was accused of using chemical weapons. According to the president, it later turned out that these accusations were fake. In turn, Lukashenka called the situation in Bucha a “psychological special operation” Britain.

After the publication of photos from Bucha, the European Union announced that it would tighten sanctions against Russia. On April 8, another package of sanctions against Moscow was introduced.

Macron said that Putin respects and singles out France among Western countries

Macron: Putin singles out France among other Western countries, relations need to be rethought European countries should rethink relations with Russia and Turkey in order to “bring” them closer to themselves, Macron believes. According to him, Putin distinguishes France from other Western countries, but dialogue with him is always frank

“I think that Putin respects France and distinguishes it from other Western countries,” — Macron emphasized (quote from TASS).

This principle, Macron emphasized, was enshrined in the Charter of Paris in 1990, the only exception to this “dogma” were the events in Yugoslavia.

“What is happening in Ukraine” this is a huge factor for the destabilization of the Western Balkans,— considers the French president.

According to Macron, the Russian president decided to launch a military special operation in Ukraine because of a feeling of anti-Western ressentiment and a lack of contact with other people due to the coronavirus pandemic, reports Bloomberg. Russian forces will continue to operate in Ukraine to achieve results by the May 9 Victory Day, the French President believes. He promised that he would continue contacts with Putin.

Basurin announced preparations for the encirclement of the AFU grouping of 100 thousand fighters

At present, the DPR and the Russian Armed Forces are preparing to encircle the largest grouping of Ukrainian troops. According to the official representative of the People's Militia of the Donetsk People's Republic, Eduard Basurin, its number is about 100 thousand people.

According to him, these are the most combat-ready parts of Kyiv at the moment.

“After blocking of this group and, if they do not surrender, completely destroy it, Ukraine will actually lose its army… and the issue of demilitarization, one might say, has been resolved by 90%,” the colonel emphasized.

He specified that the group is located on the territory “south of Donetsk” to Slavyansk. The length of the front is about 200 km, and the depth is to central Ukraine.

Earlier, Eduard Basurin reported that assault detachments with flamethrowers would be engaged in cleaning up the industrial zone of Mariupol.

160 marines surrendered in Mariupol, who had already been captured in Crimea

About 160 Ukrainian marines surrendered in Mariupol. They went out to the Russian military from the building of the Azovstal plant. There were about five times more of them than the fighters of the Russian Armed Forces.

Alexander Sladkov, a war correspondent for the Vesti Department of the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, reported this. He said that the prisoners were not afraid to surrender, because they knew who they were going to.

“We are not afraid, we are surrendering to the Russians. We think you will not leave us in trouble,” they said.

It is curious that this battalion had already surrendered in Kerch during the Russian spring.

“He was then abandoned by the command from Kyiv and simply ordered to hold on. And now the marines were left to die again, now surrounded at Azovstal,” Sladkov specified.

The day before, he said that people were hiding in the catacombs of Azovstal, the announcement of whose names would become a sensation of the week.

“There was an agreement with the Ukrainian security forces”: political scientists predicted Russia’s actions

What should the special operation in Ukraine lead to

Vladimir Putin defined the main goal of the special operation in Ukraine as “helping the people in Donbass, the people of Donbass.” Does this mean that after the republics reach the borders of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, the tasks can be considered completed? As we can see, the Ukrainian authorities, who until recently longed for negotiations and a peace agreement, today, under pressure from partners from the United States and Great Britain, do not remember any Treaty. And without it, no “status quo” is possible.

Photo: RF Ministry of Defense

At one time, both “Minsk 1” and “Minsk 2” were signed after the successful operations of the DPR and LPR to process Ukrainian troops in “boilers”. And now the Ukrainian authorities were more accommodating when Russian troops were standing near Kiev.

What will happen after the People's Militia of the republics and Russian troops recapture the entire territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions: a Victory parade or a respite? Experts shared their opinion on the future of the special operation with us:

Yegor Kholmogorov, publicist: “The very liberation of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics is impossible without entering other regions of Ukraine. After all those territories that are minimally necessary for the liberation of the entire Donbass are occupied, it will be a mistake to leave them. Now structures oriented towards Russia are already being deployed there, normal life is already being established, and it is clear that it will be replaced by terror if Ukraine is launched there again.

Therefore, I think that those areas that in the narrow sense of the word relate to the concept of Novorossia and which are located on the left bank of the Dnieper, one way or another will be under Russian protectorate.

As for the further development of events, a lot depends on the policy of the Ukrainian authorities. Now she is so insane that, I'm afraid, Russia will have to continue the operation until the complete deconstruction of this political regime. Moreover, the West will not give the Ukrainian authorities the opportunity to negotiate with Russia. The United States and the EU confirm this with their statements that a military victory over Russia and a continuation of the war to the last Ukrainian are needed.

For our part, in this situation, there is no point in stopping, because this is just creating problems for ourselves in future.”

Sergey Markov, political scientist: “What steps Russia will take after the liberation of the territories of the DPR and LPR is still unknown. This is a state secret. Even the original plan is unknown – and rightly so. Now we can only reconstruct what that plan was. Russia's actions were supposed to lead to the flight of the government of Ukraine, while the security forces would take power. With some of them there was some level of agreement.

After that, the formation of a government friendly to Russia was to take place. On what grounds Ukrainian statehood should have been built in this case is also not clear.

But this plan failed. Zelensky remained in power and, apparently, not of his own free will. Representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not dare to take power into their own hands and turned out to be loyal to the regime – in contrast to the situation in Crimea in 2014, where 87% of the Ukrainian military went over to the side of Russia.

Now there is another concept, where the defeat of the most important and best-equipped group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which is concentrated in the Donbass, is of the utmost importance. It all depends on how the operation will develop in this direction. If the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation manage to defeat the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Donbass in 1-1.5 months, then, together with the troops of the DPR and LPR, it is possible to continue the liberation of the rest of the territory of Ukraine. Then there must be some kind of reorganization. Which one? Either Novorossia, or federal Ukraine. This question remains open.

Further political strategy here depends on the military one. But there are several factors. Firstly, the Kyiv regime is not independent, being under the control of the British and Americans. Secondly, this is not just a military special operation, but a struggle for the population. For the right to turn off someone else's TV and turn on your own.

We are very far behind here and weakly acting. So far, no specialized channel has been created for the pro-Russian citizens of Ukraine.

There is another version of the development of events, actually according to the American plan. The fighting continues. Russia completely liberates the DPR and LPR – while a tough anti-Russia will be formed on the territory of Ukraine. Another option is when the DPR, LPR, Kherson region, Zaporozhye region unite and provide Russia with a land corridor to Crimea and control over the North Crimean Canal.

Putin promised Russia grandiose events

And Lukashenka gave him secret documents

Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko celebrated Cosmonautics Day at the Vostochny Cosmodrome. According to tradition, Old Man brought his son Kolya with him, as well as documents from the Belarusian special services proving that Bucha was a “psychological special operation” organized by the British. “Bucha is just as fake as the use of chemical weapons in Syria,” Putin confirmed.

The trip of Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko to the Vostochny Cosmodrome was held under the slogan “We did it then, we can do it now.” The president, at every opportunity, emphasized that the USSR, preparing for the conquest of space, was in complete “technological isolation”; and under “total sanctions”. However, he turned out to be the first in everything — from satellite launch to spacewalk. “Is today's Russia unable to continue its development?” — asked the GDP. And he himself answered: “Of course, he can. We will raise our competencies. Those petrodollars that used to go to buy technology abroad, now, according to Putin, will be spent on their own developments.

Although import substitution in space began after Crimea, there is still a long way to go. And most importantly — new challenges: Russia, within the framework of international cooperation, specialized in the production of space transport. But after a number of countries refused to cooperate, “carry” there will be nothing on the rockets. Few domestic satellites are launched. And for the remaining foreign ones there are strong competitors — like SpaceX. In addition, time is playing against Russia: while they are “import substituting” already existing technologies, the West (as well as China, which actively copies and improves all developments) will go far ahead. A case in point — history of the navigation satellite of the third generation GLONASS-K2. It was originally planned to be launched in 2017–2018, then at the end of 2019–2020, then the start was shifted to 2021, and now — in the second quarter of 2022. But again, this is not accurate.

However, Vladimir Putin said that the prospects are good. And its main ally will help the Russian Federation. “We united the scientific and industrial potential of Russia and the leading enterprises of Belarus, which have always, since Soviet times, been famous for their competencies in the production of high-precision equipment, the most complex optoelectronic and radio engineering systems,” — said the GDP, adding that the Belarusians will also help in the creation of plasma engines and the construction of the satellite town of Tsiolkovsky. “It won't rust behind us,” — readily promised Lukashenka. He noted that at the cosmodrome it is not felt at all that there are any sanctions, — all around yours. “And why are we soaring because of these sanctions? — Father was perplexed. — We will do everything ourselves. It just takes a little time.” The President of Belarus stressed that his visit to Vostochny — this is not an ordinary visit, but a demonstration of the highest level of trust on the part of Putin — because he “does not bring anyone here.”

Together with his son Kolya, he watched Putin present awards to Russian cosmonauts. And he certainly imagined himself in his place, especially since it seems that it would not be long to wait: the flight of the representative of Belarus into space is scheduled for 2023-2024. The workers, who were waiting for the leaders in the next room, asked if the presidents remembered April 12, 1961? Vladimir Putin was then 8, and Lukashenka — 6 years. However, as it turned out, both remember, although they did not understand “in full what happened.” “I saw something great happen! I am sure that we will have events of this kind in the future, », — assured the Russian president. At these words, a man emerged from the crowd of workers and reported: “We all fully support the actions of our army in Ukraine. And we want the goals and tasks that were set for the special military operation to be fulfilled. I have everything». “So be it, — Putin confirmed. — There is no doubt.” And he emphasized separately: “The goals are absolutely understandable and noble — this is help to the residents of Donbass, which we have recognized.

The conversation about Ukraine continued at a press conference that took place following the talks between the two leaders that took place right there, on Vostochny. Vladimir Putin said that Lukashenka handed him documents proving that the situation in Bucha, where civilians allegedly died at the hands of Russian soldiers, was a provocation. “It was a psychological special operation carried out by the British, — Father confirmed. — Together with our Russian friends, from the first to the last hour, we uncovered this vile, vile provocation of the West. According to him, the brands and numbers of cars, as well as the “passwords and appearances” used by the British, are at the disposal of the special services of Belarus and the FSB. A provocation was needed, Lukashenka specified, so that the West could impose new sanctions. And also, according to Putin, to force the Ukrainians to abandon the agreements reached at the talks in Istanbul, when Kyiv agreed to take the territory of Crimea and Donbas beyond the scope of security guarantees. “We have again returned to a dead end situation for ourselves and for everyone,” — he stated. The GDP stressed that the military operation was going according to plan: the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions were occupied and then left to tie down enemy forces, destroy military infrastructure and create conditions for more active operations in the Donbass. This task has been solved, and now the army will be engaged in the liberation of the DPR and LPR. “I often hear questions: is it possible to go faster? Can. But it depends on the intensity of the hostilities, and the intensity is associated with losses, », — the president said, noting that the military is faced with the task of achieving goals while minimizing losses.

At the same time, Putin stressed: “what is happening in Ukraine, — a tragedy, without any doubt, but Russia was left no choice. The main enemy — Washington. “Many say that the United States is ready to fight Russia to the last Ukrainian. In fact, that's the way it is. This is the quintessence of the events taking place. Now there is a demolition of the system of the unipolar world, which took shape after the collapse of the Soviet Union, », — Putin clarified his position.

Experts called the reasons for Zelensky’s refusal to accept Steinmeier

The President of Ukraine has chosen a host – the United States

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, after his visit to Poland, intended to visit Kyiv together with his colleagues from the Baltic countries on Wednesday. However, Ukrainian head Volodymyr Zelensky considered Steinmeier's visit to the country undesirable, citing his “close ties with Russia”.

Photo: Global Look Press

Steinmeier later confirmed the unwillingness of the Ukrainian side to see him in Kyiv and said that he would “take note of this.” The politician kept silent about his ties with Russia.

The real position of the President of Germany is quite obvious. From the beginning of the special operation in Ukraine, Steinmeier demanded that the Russian leadership stop it immediately. Later, the German president repeatedly stated that it was impossible to normalize relations with Russia as long as Vladimir Putin remained its leader. Steinmeier also supports Western rhetoric about Russia's alleged war crimes in Ukraine and calls for them to be judged, including by the country's political leadership.

The Ukrainian side, even before refusing to accept Steinmeier, allowed rather harsh statements in relation to the President of Germany. Andriy Melnyk, the Ukrainian ambassador to Germany, especially “distinguished himself” here, who accused the German leader not only of ties with Moscow, but also of the fact that Steinmeier considers relations with Russia to be sacred and allegedly, like the Kremlin, does not recognize the existence of the Ukrainian people, language and culture.

For such statements and annoying demands that Germany supply Ukraine with weapons, Melnik was sharply criticized in the German media and members of the public, who are now demanding his expulsion from the country for not meeting the criteria of a diplomat.

Why Ukraine , which previously expressed its complete loyalty to the West, now allows itself such unreasonable and boorish behavior in relation to one of the main EU countries, experts told MK.

“Why the position of the Ukrainian leadership is this is not very clear. Steinmeier has never been seen to be overly loyal to Russia. The same “Steinmeier formula” is more of a technical point and nothing more,” says Director of the Institute for Peacekeeping Initiatives and Conflictology Denis Denisov

According to the expert, Zelensky himself is fine understands that all this can have natural consequences. “For countries like Germany, such an attitude is, of course, unacceptable,” Denisov concluded.

Vladimir Zharikhin, Deputy Director of the Institute of CIS Countries, explains this situation as follows: “Zelensky is so convinced in the fact that the main and only boss from the West is Washington, that everyone else can be impudent as they like, and he will get nothing for it. Because no matter how he calls the president of Germany, Germany will carry out, however, like himself, what the United States commands. Therefore, all formalities are thrown aside.”

Macron: Putin needs victory in Ukraine before May 9

French President Emmanuel Macron told Le Point magazine that the decision of the Russian leader to launch a military special operation in Ukraine was dictated by discontent policy pursued in the West.

Macron is confident that Russia will not stop the war machine in Ukraine, since Putin needs a military victory before May 9, the day Russia celebrates the victory over German fascism.

At the same time, the French leader stressed that he would continue to talk with his Russian counterpart to warn him of the danger of continued violence.

Zelensky offered to exchange Medvedchuk for Ukrainian prisoners of war

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, in his next video address, announced his readiness to exchange the leader of the Opposition Platform – For Life Viktor Medvedchuk for Ukrainian prisoners .

“It is very symbolic that Mr. Medvedchuk was detained on Cosmonautics Day. He hid for 48 days. And finally I decided to try to escape from our state. Well, for this “cosmonaut” in the bad sense of the word – the famous “Let's go!” Didn't work! – Zelensky said.

He stressed that the camouflage uniform that the opposition politician was wearing looks especially cynical. “I tried to disguise myself like that. “Here is such a “warrior”. Here is such a “patriot,” the president added.

“Well, if Medvedchuk himself chose a military uniform, he falls under the rules of wartime. I propose to the Russian Federation to exchange this guy of yours for our guys and girls in Russian captivity. Therefore, it is important that our law enforcement agencies and the military also consider this possibility,” Zelensky suggested.

Meanwhile, Rodion Miroshnik, ex-LPR representative in the contact group, believes that Medvedchuk could have been captured in February – early March, when he was still under house arrest.

“His appearance is clearly a person who has pretty much spent time“ in the basement ”- all gray-haired with tangled hair, with bruises on his face, having lost ten kilograms. The look is “glassy”, the pose is of resigned submission. Possibly under medication. Dressed in Ukrainian camouflage, obviously not from his shoulder. This means that his clothes were not at all “presentation”, it was necessary to change clothes. They pulled what the security forces had at hand,” Miroshnik said.

  • Avakov offered to exchange Medvedchuk for “the whole of Mariupol”
  • Arestovich: SBU found Medvedchuk not in Kyiv

The Foreign Ministry saw the threat of “chemical terrorism” in Ukraine

“Team Zelensky” plans provocations with chemical weapons in the Donbass, said the Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia. The threat of “chemical terrorism” of the Ukrainian side in the department is considered high. The diplomat did not rule out the repetition of “acts of terrorism” in Rubizhne The Ministry of Foreign Affairs saw the threat of “chemical terrorism” in Ukraine” />

There is a high probability that the Ukrainian authorities are planning a provocation and an act of “chemical terrorism” in the Donbass, said RIA Novosti Deputy Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Oleg Syromolotov.

“We consider the threat of chemical terrorism from the fascist nationalists operating under the auspices of the current Kiev regime and units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine controlled by them”,— said the diplomat.

Syromolotov explained that the ministry is confident in such a scenario because of the “multiple chemical provocations” that were arranged, in his opinion, by armed extremists during the conflict in Syria. They, the diplomat pointed out, operated under the control of the United States and its NATO allies. The Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia claims that the “monstrous production” of in the Ukrainian city of Bucha, as well as “plans hatched by Vladimir Zelensky’s team for chemical provocations in the Donbas.”

The Russian side, Syromolotov noted, has repeatedly raised this issue in the UN Security Council and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW ).

At the request of Roskomnadzor, RBC provides data on the details of the military operation in Ukraine based on information from Russian official sources.

Syromolotov noted that Moscow “won't be surprised” if the same accusations come from the Ukrainian side. As an example, the diplomat pointed out “recent events at the Zarya plant”; in Rubizhne, Luhansk region. “[There] the militants undertook to blow up tanks with nitric acid, so that the resulting cloud of toxic substances would be carried by the wind to the Kudryashovka settlement liberated from them,” — he says.

The Russian Foreign Ministry admits the repetition of such “acts of terrorism”. Syromolotov explained that about 40 thousand highly toxic substances remain at this plant, including — ammonia, as well as sulfuric, hydrochloric and nitric acid.

On April 5, the Investigative Committee of Russia announced that tanks with hazardous chemicals in Rubizhne had been blown up by the retreating Ukrainian military. In the tanks, according to the department, were ammonia, sulfuric, hydrochloric and nitric acids. Their inhalation threatens with severe poisoning and pulmonary edema, the UK said. The head of the department, Alexander Bastrykin, instructed to investigate the circumstances of the incident, to establish “traces of illegal actions”; and find out the specific persons who blew up the tanks.

Four days later— April 9 in the Lugansk People's Republic, another explosion of a nitric acid tank by Ukrainian forces was reported. The People's Militia of the LPR announced the release of toxic substances into the environment, urging the population to move to shelter. According to Colonel Andriy Marochko, the cistern was blown up by “Ukrainian nationalists”.

The Russian Foreign Ministry allowed the import of nuclear materials to Ukraine from third countries

Russia is considering a scenario in which nuclear material can be brought to Ukraine from third countries, said in an interview with RIA Novosti Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov. “We cannot rule out a scenario in which nuclear material can be brought to Ukraine from third countries,” — he said.

Russia has been conducting a military operation in Ukraine since February 24. Its goals are declared denazification, demilitarization of the country and protection of the civilian population of Donbass from “genocide” by the Ukrainian authorities. Moscow accused Kyiv of trying to place nuclear weapons on its territory. The Ukrainian authorities denied that they had such intentions.

In late February, the United States also rejected the possibility of supplying Ukraine with nuclear weapons. “Neither the United States nor our allies have any intention of providing nuclear weapons to Ukraine, and Ukraine does not want this,” US Permanent Representative to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said.

In early March, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the Russian military, participating in a special operation in Ukraine, was eliminating the threat of NATO bases in the country and nuclear weapons.

Political scientist Cook called a “gloomy” symptom of the collapse of US dominance

American political scientist Stephen Cook, after analyzing the current international situation, expressed the opinion that the deterioration of relations between the United States and the Middle East is a “gloomy symptom” of the end of the American world order built after the Second World War. Such changes in the international community were influenced, among other things, by Russia's special operation in Ukraine. The content of the analyst's article in the Foreign Policy publication is provided by

As an example of the collapse of US dominance in the world, the columnist cited, for example, the fact that the authorities of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates recently left unanswered calls from US President Joe Biden, which indicates their distrust of American statements about their security. Also, Stephen Cook points out that “the UAE government refrained from condemning Russia's special operation in the UN Security Council”, in addition, the UAE and Saudi Arabia do not support sanctions against Russia.

Cook considers the relations of the White administration “obsolete” at home with the countries of the Middle East, noting that a consensus has formed in the Middle East region that does not involve active US involvement. And such key US interests in the Middle East as ensuring the supply of oil and the security of Israel are gradually losing their relevance, in his opinion.

A political scientist from the United States emphasized that the proposed American goals, namely, “countering China and Russia” or the integration of Iran in the region, are not included in the zone of interests of the countries of the Middle East.

Stephen Cook concluded that “strange shifts” are taking place, such as “passive support of America's Middle Eastern partners to Russia” and advocacy their ties with China. According to the analyst, these shifts could be called “gloomy symptoms” that portend the death of the American world order.
