Zelensky: Ukraine will return to negotiations when it returns territories lost since February 24 Before starting negotiations with Russia, Ukraine intends to return the territories it controlled before February 24, Zelensky said. Earlier, Moscow reported that Kyiv had practically withdrawn from the negotiation process =”Zelensky called the return of lost territories a condition for negotiations” />
Ukraine will begin negotiations with Russia after it returns its territories lost after the start of the Russian military special operation on February 24, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview with the Japanese television channel NHK.
“Of course, we must return all our territories . But it will most likely be related to the victims. To begin with, we plan to return [territories] to the state before February 24th. And then we will sit down at the negotiating table, & mdash; he noted.
The Russian and Ukrainian sides announced the suspension of negotiations on May 17. After the meeting of the delegations at the end of March in Istanbul, the discussion continued via video link, but now it does not take place in any form, the Russian Foreign Ministry said. Ukraine was called responsible for the suspension of negotiations in the department. According to Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko, she “practically withdrew from the negotiation process.”
In Ukraine, in early April, they said that the events in Bucha, which Russia calls a provocation, influenced the negotiating background. Russian President Vladimir Putin also spoke about the impact of these events. In addition, according to him, Kyiv has changed its position on the Donbass and Crimea and wants to decide their fate at a bilateral summit, while Moscow is seeking a settlement of this issue at the stage of the draft peace agreement.
At the same time, the Russian authorities noted that they were ready to return to negotiations. As Vladimir Medinsky, presidential aide and head of the Russian delegation, noted, Moscow handed over retaliatory proposals for a settlement to Kyiv and now “the ball is on its side.”
